Why is it that the more devout and religious a person is, the more fanatical they become?

I can think of more people who aren't religious who fit into that category. I guess having a government that will give billions to other governments, or fight gangs in other countries but won't protect their own citizens from gangs, drugs, or care about their quality of life makes people wonder.
