What could be wrong with our dryer?

When turned on it makes a terrible, fast clunking sound. The drum is rotating, the belts look like they are moving, but there is a very strong burning smell and that loud banging sound (like a sped up sound of shoes in the dryer, all the time). Obviously we haven't dryed anything since this started happening. Is it completely dead? What might be the problem?
