Is it appropriate to use "black people" and "white people" in an academic paper?

I am writing what is essentially a response to Anne Moody's Coming of Age in Mississippi. My professor wants my response about what I learned about the Civil Rights Era and my own experiences with racism. He does not care about political correctness but I still want my paper to sound academic.
