Does automatic transmission (A/T)break down easily under rough terrains than manual transmission (manual gear?

I plan buying an SUV but I am told the better option is to select one with a manual transmission since I will use the car on rough terrains in Africa. I am told the A/T needs more servicing and easily breaks down than Manual transmission.
