Do people just not understand what it means?

You hear it in songs, your spouse claims it, your friends say it..."Don't lose love over your pride." The definition of pride according to websters dictionary is: noun, self-respect, being proud of oneself and loving yourself. Now correct me if I'm wrong but don't you need to love and respect yourself in order for someone else to do it? Seriously why would you have to give up loving and respecting yourself to love someone else?
