Dates would normally be stuffed with goat cheese at an African dinner. You use pitted dates - you can get them in the grocery store - dates are kind of dry a bit to begin with so maybe that's why you're thinking they're dried dates. Also try stuffing them with garlic and wrapping them with bacon - YUM!!
